About Me

Portrait of Owner
Crystal Bevers, owner

After a lifetime of writing and over twenty years of teaching experience, I retired from my full time university faculty position to start Paper Heron Studios in January 2018.

I wanted to take everything I loved about teaching at the university–connecting with students individually or in small groups, designing courses that engage my students and me, and tinkering with the ways we play and learn and grow–and combine those pieces with a lifestyle that embraces flexibility, creativity, healing, and culture, all rooted strongly in environment and a sense of place.

Paper Heron Studios is a work of heart, mind, and body. Like any organic entity, it grows and breathes, it reflects and responds to its environment, and its ultimate purpose is to support the creative energy that connects this small corner of the world with yours.

I have an MFA in Writing from Pacific University, a BA in English Literature and Cultural Studies from Washington State University (WSU), and a certificate in Social and Environmental Justice from WSU.

My creative writing has been published in Exponent II, Silk Road ReviewGlassFire Magazine, Spark: A Creative Anthology, and Soul Paws. In 2016, I did a TEDx presentation on the value of a liberal arts education and you can find my academic research in peerReview. I was Pacific University’s 2012 nominee for the AWP Intro Journals Award and have been a finalist for the Brass NUCL Award.

Wishing you fulfilling work and joyful writing,

Crystal Bevers, Paper Heron Studios
